A phrase in Descartes' First Meditation that translates into English as: "but rather some malign genius". The act of absolute doubt comes into question when Descartes perceives this malicious demon ("an omnipotent, epistemic monster" - Carriero) to deceive him, and yet he does not question its existence as anything more than just a fiction.
